Introduction

The City of Eindhoven is the fifth-largest city in The Netherlands with over 230,000 inhabitants (ca. 1,4% of the total population). Eindhoven is situated in the south of The Netherlands and is the centre of the “Brainport Region”, today one of the three top economic engines of The Netherlands, delivering about 14% of the national GDP with 752.500 inhabitants.

The term ”Brainport” exists to indicate the specific economic status of the wider Eindhoven Region, next to the other two economic drivers of the Dutch economy, the Seaport Rotterdam and the Airport Amsterdam.

Eindhoven is an active network partner in different EU networks and initiatives that help the city to achieve its goals: POLIS, ENoll, Eurocities, Civitas initiatives, LUCI, OASC, the European Innovation Partnership (EIP) Smart Cities and Communities (EIP-SCC) Covenant of mayors for Climate and Energy, Green Deal Charter.

Eindhoven’s participation in all these networks and initiatives offers an extended outreach in different fields of expertise related to the projects: transport, digitalization, Smart Cities, environment, energy, etc.
The City of Eindhoven is excited to organize one Citython event in an international setting in collaboration with the Breda University of Applied Sciences.

Breda University of Applied Sciences (BUas) is an international higher education institution with about 7,700 students from over 60 countries, situated in the south of the Netherlands. The Academy of Built Environment and Logistics (ABEL) comprises about 1,045 students and 90 employees. BUas-ABEL has more than 3 years of experience with the organization of multidisciplinary hackathons under the initiative Youth for Public Transport (Y4PT). Recently, BUas-ABEL students were part of the winning team of the Challenge “Park that bike right” (Citython Amsterdam 2020) and part of the winning team of the challenge “Integrating the recycling industry in public transport services” (3rd Global Y4PT Hackathon Stockholm 2020).

The Eindhoven Citython is organized together with another international event for a larger exposure – the Dutch Technology Week, where the winning teams will present their innovative solutions.

Challenges

School zones and traffic safety

Proud to travel to campus, together

Make the city healthy

In the Eindhoven road safety ambitions, we state that we want to be ”a safe city with as few as possible traffic victims”. Thus, the city is striving for the safe design of all school zones according to the standard design drawn up for Eindhoven.
The Brainport region is home to the smartest companies in the Netherlands and expanding rapidly. The new way of working in this region also contains travelling to campus locations together. This Collective Private Transportation (CPT) system needs to be as smart as the companies and make the employees proud while using the system.
Eindhoven is growing. In the next 20 years, 62.000 extra houses in the city and 72.000 jobs in the region will be created. With this massive influx of new inhabitants, how can we keep the city liveable and green, and its citizens healthy.

CONGRATULATIONS TO THE WINNERS!
